Fred Whelan & Gladys Stone

FRED WHELAN and GLADYS STONE have been search professionals for the past 12 years, initially working with a large, multi-national search firm, StratfordGroup, and then opening Whelan Stone in 1999.

During the course of their search careers, both were drawn to executive coaching and began incorporating that discipline within their business model. Over the past few years, they have counseled many executives on how to enhance their leadership skills.

FRED WHELAN began his career in packaged goods marketing, rising to management level positions with H. J. Heinz and Clorox. He then embarked on a 15-year stint in advertising with J. Walter Thompson/SF and then as a stakeholder in Hoffman Lewis, an independent advertising agency in San Francisco.

He joined StratfordGroup in 1995, significantly growing the Consumer Practice, then assuming the management of the High Technology Marketing Practice for several years. In this latter position, Fred worked with a variety of clients that spanned established companies such as Intuit, as well as venture-backed start-ups including Brocade and NetDialog. His last position with StratfordGroup was as the Managing Director of the San Francisco office.

Mr. Whelan has an MBA from the Wharton Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania and a BA from the University of Delaware

GLADYS STONE brings a strong background in human resources and financial management, in a variety of industries, to Whelan Stone. After an impressive tenure with the law firm of Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold where she held the position of Director of Human Resources, Gladys started her recruiting career with a high tech search firm, where she focused on information technology and marketing professionals. Her clients ranged from management consulting firms such as Computer Sciences Corporation to start-up companies like Amplitude.

Gladys joined StratfordGroup in 1997 as a member of the High-Technology Marketing Practice. In addition to a successful track record in placing high tech professionals in Director and Vice President positions, Gladys continues to leverage her background and go beyond typical search parameters by providing HR counsel to her clients. A representative list of clients would include Intuit, Discover Brokerage, and Blanc & Otus.

Ms. Stone has a BS from San Francisco State University.
